Venezuela Opposition Leader Says Last Trump Contact Was in October
"I actually spoke with President Trump on October 10, the same day the prize was announced, not since then," Machado told media.
Trump confirmed Saturday that a US military operation successfully apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro alongside first lady Cilia Flores, while vowing to impose American authority over the nation temporarily, deploying troops if required.
Machado revealed she immediately dedicated her prestigious honor to Trump upon receiving notification of the award. The Nobel Committee recognized Machado with the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for championing democratic freedoms and facilitating peaceful transition from authoritarian governance to democracy in Venezuela.
"I believe he (Trump) deserved it in October. Imagine now! I think he has proven to the world what he means. I mean, January 3 will go down in history as the day justice defeated a tyranny. It's a milestone," she stated.
Questioned whether she proposed transferring the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump, Machado indicated no formal arrangement exists currently.
"I certainly want to give it to him and share it with him," she said.
The opposition leader's comments underscore the complex relationship between Venezuelan dissidents and the Trump administration as Washington extends its military footprint following Maduro's dramatic capture. Her October conversation preceded the weekend operation by three months, raising questions about coordination timing and strategic planning between anti-Maduro forces and American officials.
