Schumer Demands Pentagon Release Full Boat Strike Video
"Pete Hegseth must release the unedited videos of his reckless and dangerous strikes in the Caribbean. Congress will withhold a big chunk of his travel budget until he does so. The American people deserve full transparency," Schumer stated on the social media platform X.
His comments come as lawmakers consider freezing part of Hegseth’s travel budget until the Pentagon provides the video of the September 2 operation, which has sparked concerns that two survivors clinging to the wreckage of their boat may have been killed.
Last week, the administration allowed only select members of Congress to view the footage in a closed session.
On Sunday evening, the House of Representatives introduced a comprehensive defense policy bill proposing $901 billion in U.S. military spending for the next fiscal year.
The legislation would also withhold a quarter of Hegseth’s office travel funds until both the House and Senate Armed Services committees receive “unedited video of strikes carried out against designated terrorist organizations within the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility.”
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that he would leave it up to Hegseth to decide whether to release the full video of the second strike, softening his stance from last week when he told reporters: "I don't know what they have, but whatever they have would certainly (be) released. No problem."
